Books and opening test positions in Chessgui
Books and opening test positions in Chessgui
What's the difference between the remis book and the winning book in Chessgui and how do you use them?
Also I'm trying to use the Nunn postions (attached) in a engine match but they are being ignored. How do I do this?
Thanks.

A winning book helps black OR white to get an opening advantage out of book.JohnS wrote:What's the difference between the remis book and the winning book in Chessgui and how do you use them?

A remis book seeks for equal chances for black AND white.
The tags in your nunn.pgn should start with "[Event "?"]".

My Nunn.pgn is from Chessbase, and works ok for engine matches in other guis. Although it's easy to make the change you said, would it be better in future if Chessgui treats the string "" as "?".Matthias Gemuh wrote:A winning book helps black OR white to get an opening advantage out of book.JohnS wrote:What's the difference between the remis book and the winning book in Chessgui and how do you use them?

ChessGUI does not require "?", though "" is against the Pgn Specification.JohnS wrote:My Nunn.pgn is from Chessbase, and works ok for engine matches in other guis. Thanks.
According to the Pgn Specification, here are the 7 tags a pgn should at least have, and in that order.
Code: Select all
The seven tag names of the STR are (in order):
1. Event (the name of the tournament or match event)
2. Site (the location of the event)
3. Date (the starting date of the game)
4. Round (the playing round ordinal of the game)
5. White (the player of the white pieces)
6. Black (the player of the black pieces)
7. Result (the result of the game)
Aided by engines, GMs can be very strong.

Anyway, ChessGUI shall be relaxed to accept a pgn like your nunn.pgn.

I must be doing something wrong. I put the question marks in nunn.pgn but the start positions are still ignored by Chessgui. Is there anything else I need to do to force it to use these positions and not an opening book?Matthias Gemuh wrote:Anyway, ChessGUI shall be relaxed to accept a pgn like your nunn.pgn.

Try moving the Event tag to first position among the tags.JohnS wrote:I must be doing something wrong. I put the question marks in nunn.pgn but the start positions are still ignored by Chessgui. This didn't help (see attached). Should the tag order matter in the pgn file anyway?Matthias Gemuh wrote:Try moving the Event tag to first position among the tags.JohnS wrote:I must be doing something wrong. Re: Books and opening test positions in Chessgui
Only the Event tag is needed by ChessGUI. It is the beginning of a new game.JohnS wrote:

Your Nunn1.pgn is in a format I expect ChessGUI to handle.
I'll check and fix the problem in ChessGUI. Which version are you using ?
