Martin,if you are planning to continue these testings then i think it's interesting to have this as a base.
now 30 games..later you can dubble it or put a new engine in this tournament..and like this you will make a great list

Do the engines play the same opening against each other? The current opening in the game Houdini - Stockfish is quite disadvantageous for white. To make it fair, the same opening should be played in the rematch Stockfish - Houdini.

As a book is used and not a PGN I can't change the opening for each game.

The reason that a book was used was that the use of a PGN in Fritz GUI when running a round-robin offers no choice of a different opening each round, only each cycle which would mean 1 opening for the whole tournament if engines were to play both black and white pieces against each other.

In the matches, however, the use of a PGN is no problem.

How about playing a double round robin afterwards with these 6 or even the best 8 engines, but without any opening book? No more arbitrary opening choices, but the need for each engine to show its chess understanding from the first move.

As the "best first moves" of these engines all slightly differ, you get a variation of openings and still absolutely equal chances. Would be interesting to see which openings they play into, given so much time and computing power, and how the results differ from a the current tournament, where they can start with the middlegame.

Yes, it's an interesting idea. I am not sure how people would receive it, though, or how good the openings would be. But it would be fun to try it once.
