Poll about Blue Marlin/Swordfish future

Post by dorsz » Mon Mar 20, 2023 6:46 am

In the beginning, Swordfish was my main engine that I wanted to create, to make Stockfish a more tactical engine at a small cost of losing a few Elo's. The much more aggressive but also weaker Blue Marlin was a side project made for fun. Over time, however, Stockfish's progress was so great that despite the very aggressive settings in Blue Marlin, this engine was strong enough to play with a strength similar to Stockfish. Then Blue Marlin became my main project and work on Swordfish was paused mainly because the newer changes made the engine lose its aggressive nature.

At the moment, Stockfish progress is slow despite many patches, and testing if the changes are good for Blue Marlin is quite difficult and time consuming because of many differences between the engines. I'm thinking of stopping development and going back to Swordfish. Swordfish based on the latest Stockfish would be easier to test, but will not be as interesting as Blue Marlin.

Both engines are very good.
I use Blue Marlin in open positions or with tactical complications, and I use Swordfish in positions that require finding a good game plan.

Hello Dorsz,
the fact is that when playing on the server, it doesn't matter whether an engine 30 Elo is better or weaker. The style is much more important. I'm a fan of your Blue Marlin engine and will continue to use it for tactical analysis. I played in the last prize tournament on InfinityChess in June 2022, with Blue Marlin 15.1 and the engine came in 4th place, playing on 8 cores.

Best wishes,
Eduard

Hi Dorsz

You, your engines and the poll you have provided caused that I registered to this site (forum) too. I have used both of your engines for analysis(of

course mostly swordfish) and I think both of them are fantastic. I voted to poll and filled the questionnaire. I do not want to talk about my vote and

do not have any recommendations here because according to me you are a capable engine maker who knows well what he wants from programming

and engine making. You know the advantages of each of your engines also you know the conditions and difficulties in this way better than everyone

else. But I believe that you personally will make the best decision.

Best regards

Thank you for feedback and filling the form (also at http://www.outskirts.altervista.org/for ... 252#p54252).
I see that I should not abandon any engine yet.
