Need advice New player

Post by MATIUS88 » Wed May 21, 2014 9:47 pm

Hi, how are you, my name is Matías im 25 years old and im a software programmer from Buenos Aires argentina.
Recently im feeling the urge of learning chess but i dont know where to start, i look that there are lots of books of openings strategies and for learning it, but i need and advice of what should i do first.
For making it clear (my english writing is very poor haha so i have to do this) this are the things that i have doubt about:
1- its there any good online chess (free or pay) with rank on it, or something else like the tipical casual chess.
2- its there any books, series of books, or learning paths you guys can recommend me to read to learn better moves (im currenlty playing without concern of any oppenings defense strategies, im only reacting to my opponents moves)
3- its there any web with cool puzzles?.

any other information you can give me is highly appreciated!, thanks for all!!

regards

Matías.

I would recommend that you start at either http://www.chess.com or http://www.playchess.com, both of which offer puzzles, training, and a chance to play other people. You can try them for free, but both require a paid membership (usually US$50-US$100/year) for full access. If you are completely new to chess, they both have lessons for beginners in multiple languages.

If you want to try a book, I would recommend Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess -- it's been around for a while, but is a good book for a beginner, and will get you started in the right direction.

Cheers!

For chess tactics I use http://chesstempo.com/chess-tactics.html; chess tactics are probably most important at start. <2200 most games are decided with tactics i would say.

You can try FICS, but it is a real free-for-all.

The Bobby Fischer book is excellent, and I would HIGHLY recommend all of the Yasser Seirawan books.
Try this in google:
yasser seirawan winning chess books
Half Price books is a good place to buy books. Try this search before you make your final purchase:
