I would like to mark squares with numbers in order to denote key squares and corresponding squares (I've seen this done in books). See this link to get the idea (The second diagram shows the numbers):

I would also like to show other symbols than numbers if possible - like stars to show key squares or to superimpose borders on squares.
Can someone tell me of a program that can do the above? Any help would be great!
