OpenSUSE 11.4 Released

For those not comfortable with Linux or the installation, you can try the livecd, and also I may be able to give a little helping hand.

In my view, Linux/Unix is a better environment to learn programming or do any related activities. Crafty, Stockfish, IvanHoe, etc. source codes are all available for Linux if you decide you want to compile your own.

Sorry, edited my post apparently while you typed. And by the way, Macs have never impressed me, just seem like an over-priced Unix with restrictions. :P

Much too much overpriced, I nearly died laughing when one of my friends told me he had bought the latest Imac. Specs-wise it had less under the hood than the PC i bought a year earlier but three times the price!

As for opensuse, how does it compare to ubuntu?

Honestly I haven't played much with Ubuntu or any other distros after switching from RedHat/Fedora to SuSE (2004?). From public opinion, many Windows users are quite satisfied with OpenSUSE, but Ubuntu is definitely generating more buzz.

It's largely a matter of taste, if you're buying a new computer and price is a minor issue. I have several comp sci major friends who use Macbooks, and their everyday user and developer experience looks at least as good as mine. I switched from OS X to Debian/PPC because 10.0 was far too slow, and have stuck with Linux ever since. I feel crippled on a computer where I can't have a powerful CLI in the background or sloppy focus. I would never even consider another OS on a rescue CD / thumbdrive. But 10.6 is far faster than 10.0, lets you install a powerful CLI pretty easily (far superior to anything that runs via cmd.exe, which is awful), and hardly stops you from booting Linux in emergency situations. It certainly deserves more than a "lol". :)

I do own a mac (with osx 10.6) - without macports it would be unusable for my taste (and I'd have to run Linux solely on it).

My other PC/Laptop are doing fine with Debian...

You can get IntelĀ® Parallel Studio XE 2011 Linux free for non commercial use. This can be configured with IDE such as eclipse.

Another powerful IDE is Oracle Solaris Studio (formerly Sun Studio). It is also free.
