z80 engines

Hello,
I noticed that many of the microcomputers in the 80s were based on z80 cpus. Besides SARGON are there any example sources available?
The machine I have is a +3 spectrum so There is around 100k of ram available to create a chess program. I was planning to use floppy disks to load board evaluation data.
I am looking at different ways to create the engine.
The other question I had was did any of the dedicated machine ROMs ever get released. I was curious how they managed to get these devices to work with only 170-256 bytes of ram.
