Most common algorithms for supervised learning

Hi!
I am now doing reserach work about different methods to implement supervised learning in a chess engine and I found some interesting information on Chess Programming Wikispaces website, but I didn't think that they actually provided so much about specifically supervised learning in chess programming.
What I missed on that website is the historical overview about the development of usage of supervised learning when applied into chess programming and what methods are the most efficient today and preferred by chess programmers in general.
So I would really appreciate if someone here, that has good insights around chess programming, could give references (primarily scientific) on this topic so that I can make a complete state-of-art analysis when it comes to usage of supervised learning in chess programming earlier and today.
Thanks in advance!
