But he claimed that Rh4 is the key. Though I suppose the same issue could occur with the Rh4 line.

Critter thinks that 54. Be4-b7 is weaker than 54. Be4-a8. The latter move avoids mate for one more move. So it seems that Deep Junior's evaluation is wrong.
