Critter-1.6a shows mate in ≤ 15 for Rh4 and for g2, and mate in ≤ 16 for Bf6:

Code: Select all

23/54 10:12 8221M 13415K +M15 Rh4 Rf4 Rxf4 exf4+ Kxf4 Ba8 Qf1+ Ne1 Qxe1+ Kc2 Qxb4 Rd8 Qa4+ Kd3 Qb5+ Kd2 Qa5+ Kc2 Qxd8 Bg2 Qa5 Kb3 Qb5+ Kc2 Ke3 Bf1 Qa4+ Kb1 Qd1#

Code: Select all

30/64 10:23 8429M 13524K +M15 g2 Bxg2 Qxg2 Rd1 Rh2 Rc7 Qe2 Rc5+ Kh6 Rg1 Qd3 Re1 Rd2 Rh1+ Kg7 Rc7+ Kf6 Rc6+ Ke5 Rc5+ Kd6 Rc6+ Kxc6 b5+ Kd6 Rc1 Rd1 Rxd1 Qxd1#

Code: Select all

31/62 56:06 43875M 13033K +M16 Bf6 Rxf6 Kxf6 Rd6+ Ke7 Re6+ Kf7 Bxg6+ Kg7 Bxh5 Qxh5 Nxa3 Qf5+ Nc2 Qxe6 Nd4 Qg4 a3 g2 Kb2 g1=Q a4 Qe4 Nf5+ Qxf5 e4 Qxe4 a5 Qxb4+ Kc2 Qgb1#
I'll search one more time for mate in ≤ 14.

Well, Critter says g2 leads to mate in ≤ 14

Code: Select all

33/62 30:01 22040M 12233K +M14 g2 Bxg2 Qxg2 Rd1 Rh2 Rc7 Qe2 Rc5+ Kh6 Rg1 Qd3 Rc7 Rd2 Rh1+ Kg5 Rc5+ Kf6 Rc6+ Ke5 Rc5+ Kd6 Rc1 Rd1 Rc6+ Kxc6 b5+ Kd7 Rxd1 Qxd1#
But now I see that the PV is fifteen moves---a bug in Critter?!

Maybe the critter output is what the o.p. saw.

But he claimed that Rh4 is the key. Though I suppose the same issue could occur with the Rh4 line.

Apparently, Be5 is also mate in ≤ 15:

Code: Select all

29/68 29:33 24062M 13566K +M15 Be5 Bf3 Qf1+ Rd1 g2 Bxh5 Qxf7 Kc1 Qf2 Bf3 Bb2+ Kb1 g1=Q Rxg1+ Qxg1+ Ne1 Qf2 Bd5 Qe2 Nf3+ Kh6 Bb3 Qd3+ Bc2 Qf1+ Ne1 Qxe1+ Bd1 Qxd1#

Hello,

In fact my Deep Junior 13.3 was claiming Mat in 14 but I'll double check.

Cheers,

Gab

Critter thinks that 54. Be4-b7 is weaker than 54. Be4-a8. The latter move avoids mate for one more move. So it seems that Deep Junior's evaluation is wrong.
