Chess Players Quantum?

Post by Sean Evans » Wed Jun 20, 2012 10:58 pm

Hello Group,

I was reading the following article and it states some interesting numbers:

* 44 million Americans are chessplayers; and
* 605 million globally are chessplayers.

If these numbers are correct then 14% (44M / 314M) of Americans and 7% (605M / 7,000M) globally are chessplayers. If so, then why are the Internet chess servers normally showing between 1,500 and 3,000 chessplayers online at any one time? I presume they mean these people know how to move the chess pieces, but the majority are not avid chess players or even play the game!

Has anyone else seen some figures on the numbers of chess players :?:

Cordially,

Sean
