with pin detection that can easily solve this position:
8/8/5N2/8/5N1p/1p3knR/KPp2prb/n1B2b1B w - -

The Glinscott stockfish engine:
https://github.com/glinscott/Stockfish/tree/pinned_null

The position (it is the one labeled 'corrected' by Moky about half way down the page):
http://rybkaforum.net/cgi-bin/rybkaforu ... ?tid=22575

The analysis (correct move found in 51 seconds, mate resolved in 6 minutes... I am guessing it will take a long time to resolve the minimum mate plan, but it clearly has the right idea):
  • FEN: 8/8/5N2/8/5N1p/1p3knR/KPp2prb/n1B2b1B w - - 0 1

What makes it so difficult for an engine to solve it? Pruning?

If an engine understands pinned pieces, then this position becomes far simpler. The particular Glinscott Stockfish I used has special code for pinned pieces. I really like it for complicated endgames.

It is amazing how fast smirf finds the right answer.
I guess that smirf has sophisticated pin detection code.
